Distileria Bago, Inc. or DBI is located in Barangay Taloc, Bago City, and 13.5 kilometer south of Bacolod City, Capital of Negros Occidental. A 32 hectares production complex built in 115 hectares of land, DBI is an alcohol manufacturing company using advanced fermentation and distillation technology to produce quality alcohol from molasses.
DBI was established to assure La Tondeña Distillers, Inc. (LTDI), the makers of Ginebra San Miguel, Añejo Rum and Vino Kulafu, the dominant market and a steady supply of alcohol. Anticipating an increase in alcohol requirements in the coming years, LTDI entered into a partnership in 1992 with Maayo Holdings, Inc., whose owners included respected names in the sugar industry, in order to set up DBI.
Negros Occidental became the logical choice for the site of DBI because of two main reasons: (a) the easy availability of molasses, a by-product of sugar milling in the province and the primary raw material for the manufacture of alcohol and (b) the warm reception and enthusiastic response of local government officials to the project. Another consideration for building the plant in Negros was to help boost the local economy through DBI’s participation in the government’s countryside development thrust.
Construction work of the DBI production complex started after the ground breaking ceremony on April 2, 1992 and took about one and a half (1 ½) years to complete. The plant started its commercial operations in September 01, 1994 with a rated capacity of 150,000 liters alcohol using batch type fermentation process and 48 tons of food grade Liquefied Carbon Dioxide per day.
The plant also has installed a state of the art wastewater treatment facility that is designed to meet the standards set by the government and to protect the surrounding communities. Effluent resulting from the alcohol distillation and fermentation passed through an ultra-modern effluent treatment system. The treated effluents are dispersed deep down the Guimaras undercurrent where it cannot be washed back ashore through a submarine pipeline measuring approximately 3,000 meters away from the shore.  The remaining discharge is environmentally safe and will not pose any danger to any organism including aquatic life.   Moreover, DBI Waste Water Treatment Plant’s digester produces 2,700 Nm per hour biogas which is fed to a boiler as substitute for bunker fuel.
In March 1996, Maayo Holdings, Inc. waived its 60% DBI shares in favor of LTDI to concentrate in sugar and molasses trading business, their field of expertise. From then on, DBI became a 100% owned subsidiary of LTDI, also a subsidiary of San Miguel Corporation. In 2003, LTDI was renamed Ginebra San Miguel, Inc or GSMI. Thus, DBI became a wholly owned subsidiary of GSMI.
DBI had been envisioned to be the major supplier of alcohol and liquid cardon dioxide in the domestic market. Hence, it started to expand October 1996- increasing its alcohol capacity to 300,000 liters per day and liquid carbon dioxide to 160 tons per day. It adopted a new technology from PRAJ using continuous fermentation system for molasses. Moreover, one out of its four distillation columns, could run cassava (as raw material) using the batch fermentation system.
DBI has maintained its culture of quality both for its products and its people. A Barangay Ginebra- DBI, we make everyday life a celebration.
